Custom ERP or SAP, Odoo and Tally — the real comparison

Packaged ERP is the right answer for a lot of companies, and we will say so when it is. The case for custom ERP is narrower and specific: when the process that makes you money is the part no package supports, when licence and consultant costs over five years exceed the cost of owning the system, or when you have already customised a package so heavily that upgrades have become dangerous.

  • Packaged ERP: faster to start, proven modules, but you adapt to the software and pay per user forever
  • Custom ERP: higher upfront cost, no licence fees, and the system fits the process that differentiates you
  • Hybrid: keep Tally or Zoho Books for accounts and build custom around operations — often the most economical route

Rolled out module by module, not all at once

The classic ERP disaster is a single cutover weekend where the whole company switches systems at once. We do not do that. Modules go live one at a time, in the order that removes the most pain first, with the old system running alongside until the new one is proven. Most clients see their first module in production within ten weeks.

  • Module priority set by where the manual work and the leakage actually are
  • Old and new systems run in parallel through each cutover
  • Historical data migrated and reconciled before a module goes live
  • On-site training in Kolkata for each department as its module arrives
  • Written SOPs and video walkthroughs handed over, so training survives staff turnover

Indian compliance built in, not bolted on

An ERP that cannot produce a compliant GST invoice or an e-way bill is a liability. We build Indian statutory requirements into the data model from the start rather than patching them in later, and we keep them current as the rules change.

  • GST-compliant invoicing with HSN and SAC codes, and GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B data export
  • E-way bill and e-invoice IRN generation through the government APIs
  • TDS and TCS computation with challan-ready reports
  • PF, ESI, and professional tax in payroll
  • Two-way Tally synchronisation where you want to keep Tally as the book of record
  • Role-based access and immutable audit trails for statutory audit

FAQ

Questions we get every week

How much does custom ERP development cost in Kolkata?

A two or three module ERP covering inventory, purchase, and sales typically runs ₹6–15 lakh. A full system including production, accounts, and HR runs ₹18–45 lakh depending on complexity. There are no per-user licence fees afterwards, which is where the comparison against packaged ERP usually turns.

How long does ERP implementation take?

Your first module is normally live in 8 to 12 weeks. A full multi-module rollout runs 6 to 14 months, delivered module by module so value arrives early instead of at the end.

Should we buy SAP or Odoo instead?

Sometimes yes, and we will tell you when. Packaged ERP wins when your processes are standard. Custom wins when the process that differentiates you is the one no package supports, when five-year licence and consulting costs exceed build cost, or when your current package is so customised that upgrades are risky.

Can it work alongside Tally?

Yes, and for many clients that is the best design. We keep Tally as the accounting book of record and build custom modules around operations, syncing masters and vouchers both ways so nothing is entered twice.

Is GST and e-way bill compliance included?

Yes. GST invoicing with HSN and SAC codes, GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B data, e-invoice IRN generation, and e-way bills through the government APIs are built into the core, along with TDS and payroll statutory computations.

Will you train our staff?

Yes, on site in Kolkata, department by department as each module goes live. You also get written SOPs and recorded walkthroughs, so new joiners can be trained without calling us.
